The last place you can get fuel before you drive over the mountain is Harrietville or Omeo depending on what side of the mountain you are on.
Important information if traveling in the winter months;
Ensure you have antifreeze additive and alpine diesel.
You must carry snow chains at all times during the declared snow season, and fit them where directed. It is a legal requirement for all vehicles entering the Alpine Road Reserve, and it is also a safety measure. You can hire chains at the base of the mountain from: Hoys Harrietville Ski Centre. When you hire your chains from Hoys in Harrietville, they will fit them for free at their mobile chain fitting service operating between Harrietville & the Mt Hotham village. Hoys will provide back up service to their chain customers at Dinner Plain and remove your chains if not required before departing for Mt Hotham or on your way home.
During winter parking permits apply if you are going to stop in the Mount Hotham Alpine Resort, if you are just driving through, you will not need to buy a parking permit.
